How to paint ProWall™ products

ProWall™ containers can be painted using most off-the-shelf acrylic paints, as long as the ProWall™ surface is properly prepared. The amount of surface preparation required is dependent on the current state of the container's surface and the desired final appearance.

Surface preparation is critical when painting ProWall™ containers. A new ProWall™ part will need to have a primer applied before painting. Older containers may not require a primer due to the natural roughing effects of UV exposure, but in all cases the containers must be thoroughly cleaned.

1. Clean and degrease with a mild degreasing soap such as Palmolive dish soap. Thoroughly rinse and dry.
2. Determine if a primer is required and apply a primer, if needed, as directed by the primer manufacturer.

ProWall™ is a hybrid thermoplastic that requires priming unless using specialized paints for plastics. To determine if priming is required:
  • Clean and prepare a small section of the surface to be painted.
  • Apply the paint to the small area as it would be applied to the entire part and let dry.
  • Inspect for an even finish. An uneven finish such as a "fish eye" effect indicates poor adhesion.
  • Adhesion quality can further be measured by using a sharp blade to scribe a one inch square in the painted area. Using blue painter's masking tape, adhere, then peel the tape from the test area. A paint that does not peel has good adhesion.
Recommended Primers include:
  • Rust-Oleum™ Primer for plastics
  • Krylon™ Primer for plastics
  • Plasti-kote™ Plastic bond primer
3. Apply paint as directed by the manufacturer. Acrylic paints with UV absorbers are recommended for painting ProWall™ parts, although any paint that has good adhesion can be used. For weathered parts it may be beneficial to use a thicker paint or several coats to capture loose surface fibers.
Recommended Paints for Primerless Application include:
  • Rust-Oleum™ Paint for plastics
  • Krylon™ Fusion plastic paint
  • Plasti-kote™ Plastic bond enamel
These paints may also be used as top coats over the above primers.
